Barder Rod Co The Chris Yates Merlin 9’ 2-piece c2006 in unused mint condition.

One of only two Merlins made in the perfectly-to-scale 9’ format, this rod is in unused mint condition.  In a way, it’s better than as-new.  A new rod has tender varnish for the first six months of its life.  This little beauty has fully mature varnish so that you can take it out and fish with it at once, without worrying too much that, as you grasp it tightly in anticipation of some kind of angling sensation, the carbuncle on your right palm won’t leave a mark on it.

Specification.
9’ 2-piece with a test curve of a little over a pound.  For 3 – 6 pound breaking strain reel lines and casting weights up to three quarters of an ounce.
The honey coloured blank was made from hand-split and straightened flame-tempered vintage Tonkin bamboo.
The rings are the superlative and long out of production Sapphrite Laurels Europa hard chrome plated stand offs, with Amberfin lined butt and tip rings.
The ferrule is our blued & lacquered waterproof nickel sliver splint end pattern, which retains its original honeymoon fit and its Boxwood and cork stopper.
The 22” long handle has an onion-shaped top and is fitted throughout with our own make of finely knurled aluminium fittings.
There is a hook keeper ring retained by a hand-forged nickel silver strap.
The whippings are transparent varnish-impregnated natural silk with super-fine chestnut tippings and chestnut whippings over the ferrule splints.
The hand-applied yacht varnish finish is flawless.
The Indian ink inscription is: The Chris Yates Merlin 9’. 2006.
The rod comes in its tailored bag.

If you enjoy small stream and pond fishing and have grown weary of the shortcomings of old, cheap and usually rather nasty offerings from post-War Redditch, this is a rod to consider very seriously.  Small but perfectly formed, it is also incredibly light in the hand.  It isn’t a puny version of the Merlin, as you can see from the specification, and it will provide a lifetime of reliable service.

Price: £1,800
