B. James & Son, Ealing, London - Richard Walker MK IV Avon - Green whipped c1953

This is a rare, early and exceptional example of the classic 10’ 2-piece Avon rod.  Built on a hand-made split cane blank supplied by Bob Southwell of Croydon, the whippings were applied by Mrs Murgett, wife of well known London tackle dealer and bait supplier Frank Murgett.

The intermediate rings are the original chromed steel bridge pattern, with rare and beautiful agate and nickel silver butt and tip rings.

The cork handle has a trumpet-shaped top.  The alloy butt cap (with its red rubber button), sliding bands and shoulder collar were made by WR Products (of Speedia reel fame) of Shepherds Bush.  The blued brass reinforced splint end suction ferrule is a facsimile of the original and retains the original mahogany and cork stopper.

The rod has its original bag with its B.  James label.

This rod has recently been professionally restored.  The work has been carried out sensitively and to a very high standard indeed.  As well as the ferrule, the main whippings have been renewed, but the intermediate whippings are original and the transfers are undamaged.  There is no demarcation line between areas of original and new finish.  We have tested this rod for soundness and usability and it passed with distinction.  The work carried out should be viewed as sensible maintenance to preserve the utility and integrity of this very are and beautiful rod.

Price: £1,500
