Barder Rod Co.  The Kennet Perfection 11¼' 2-piece + handle c1993 in mint condition

This is a classic and correct Kennet Perfection with a very desirable specification in perfect condition, as its photographs show.  The action is absolutely faithful to the Oliver’s/Southwell style.  I acquired Ted Oliver’s original planning block for this model, which he had obtained from Bob Southwell (supplier of blanks for the best early B.  James, Ogden Smith and other high class rods) when he served his apprenticeship under him.  It has the dimensions inscribed on it, so I have always been able to build proper Kennet Perfections.

The blank is made from very clear, clean, light honey coloured vintage bamboo.  It was so well seasoned that it didn’t have to be flamed for long to reach perfect temper, so it didn’t darken much.  The rod is absolutely straight and resilient.  The honey colour of the blank contrasts very nicely indeed with the dark green Pearsall’s silk whippings.  Unusually for the period, the rod is close whipped throughout.

The tip-to-middle ferrule was made by an ex-Hardy ferrule maker, is a super fit and retains perfect bluing and lacquering.  The middle-to-butt ferrule was made by Beatson’s of Sheffield and is similarly snug fitting and perfectly finished.  Both ferrules retain their hand-turned and classically shaped varnished hardwood and cork stoppers.

The butt and tip rings are Amberfin, with hard chrome plated stainless steel bridge intermediate rings.  These are spaced to facilitate both ledgering and float fishing.

The detachable 26” split cane handle has finely knurled Barder alloy sliding reel bands and a matching butt cap with our maker’s details engraved in it and the usual rubber button.  The cork is the very best Flor grade turned to velvety smoothness, with an onion shaped top.

The hand applied yacht varnish finish is flawless.

The rod comes in its original brown cotton tailored bag.  There is a pocket in the flap to store the ferrule stoppers in and it has press stud fastening.

The true Kennet Perfection action is progressively all-through, so that the top half of the tip section is flexible but strong.  The lower half of the top and top half of the middle flex steadily into the reserve power of the lower mid-section.  It's a versatile rod for 4 - 8 lbs line and its generous length and limber action make it a fine float and ledger rod for roach, perch, tench, chub and barbel.

Examples as fine as this one are incredibly rare.
