Barder Rod Co mottled whole cane & split cane 3-piece 10¾' Avon rod available ex-stock.

Every so often, we have the opportunity to make a unique rod.  Such pieces enable us to deploy particularly unusual tools, techniques and materials.  In this instance, we were able to use some whole Tonkin bamboo that we had squirreled away many years ago to make the butt and middle sections.

We applied the mottling technique usually associated with our landing net handles.  This treatment, combined with appropriate tempering and straightening, utilized all of our skill and focus.  We had just one chance to make the rod we’d envisaged, and the result is both spectacular to look at and superb in its action and feel.

The whole cane sections are absolutely straight and resilient.  Whole cane’s tubular form makes it both light and exceptionally lively in feel.  The rod has that spring and character that only whole Tonkin cane produces.  The split cane tip is in perfect harmony with the whole cane sections.  As the picture of Colin Whitehouse bending the rod illustrates, the action is progressive, smooth and contemporary.  The rod is supple but also possesses excellent reserves of power, and as will be noted from the picture, the action doesn’t ‘fold up’ under load.

We have finished this rod with a respectful nod to late Victorian aesthetics and we’ve used only the most refined and attractive components.  As always, we made everything except the line guides in-house on our splendid Smart & Brown c1948 tool room lathe.

The finely knurled nickel silver sliding reel bands and butt cap have been blued and lacquered, as have the tapered handle top collar and the nickel silver splint end suction ferrules.  The ferrules are fitted with classic ‘Acorn’ shaped olive wood stoppers.

The rings are hard chrome plated stainless steel stand-offs, with lovely vintage Sapphrite Laurels butt and tip rings that have clear Amberfin centres.

The whippings are Burgundy silk (Perrivale Imperial shade 375) with very fine scarlet tippings (Pearsall’s gossamer shade 11A).  The tip has super-fine graduated intermediate whippings.  The whippings are impregnated and over-coated with a flawless yacht varnish finish.  The Indian ink inscription, located between the handle top whipping and the hook keeper ring whipping, reads 10¾’ Barder Rod Co. 2017.

The standard length for classic Avon-style rods was 18” but we have fitted this rod with a 20½” Flor grade cork handle for improved balance and comfort.  The red rubber button fitted to the butt cap has a green baize washer, in the style of the best pre-1939 Avon rods.  We machined a steel cutter specially to produce this smart little article.

Use this rod widely and with pleasure.  It will serve you well for solid chub, perch, tench and crucian carp.  It is well matched to reel lines of 3- 6 pounds breaking strain.

This rod is unique, functional and beautiful.  We have been looking, without success, for more whole bamboo of this sort for a decade, so there may never be another rod like it.
