Tom Moran (Hardy Bros) model № BRMR120 7½' #4-weight 3-piece 2-top split cane fly rod c2013.  Unused, as new and very scarce

This rod has never been used and is in as-new 100% perfect condition, with all of its original paperwork, the manufacturer’s warranty and the protective plastic sleeve on the outside of the brass capped aluminium rod tube.  It was one of the last three piece rods Tom Moran built.  It was purchased ex-stock from the Hardy works in late 2013, and the original owner was advised that there would be no Hardy Moran three piece rods built in 2014.

The late Tom Moran, who died in May 2014, was widely regarded as one of the most talented craftsmen of his generation.  He was in the vanguard of the new wave of rod makers who, inspired primarily by Everett Garrison of New York, revived the craft of split cane rod making.

From 2010, Tom Moran worked at the Hardy factory in Alnwick and the firm did him the honour of naming a range of rods after him.  The quality, style and performance of these rods are all that one could wish for in a Moran rod, and as there was no compromise in quality, production was very limited.

The rod is a ‘blonde’ model, so the split cane is a very clear and attractive natural bamboo colour, protected by its beautifully clear varnish finish.  The tips are perfectly matched and identified by numbering near the ferrules and by their colour coded tip ring tippings –one whipping is tipped red, the other green.  The butt has Moran’s typically elegant swell above the handle.

The slender cork handle is of extraordinary quality and the grip check and other reel seat fittings are perfectly machined and blued.  The tiger maple reel seat spacer is mortised to receive the foot of a fly reel and has a flawless finish.

The hard chromed stainless steel guides and Moran hook keeper have a dark pewter finish and the whippings are transparent natural silk with single strand dark tan tippings.  The perfectly fitted truncated Super-Z style ferrules are blued, and their splint ends are whipped in tan silk.  They have classic Hardy stoppers turned from figured Indian rosewood.

The rod comes in its tailored bag with a built in stiffener to protect the tip sections and an aluminium Hardy tube with very smartly engraved brass ends.

The rod casts a #4-weight line effortlessly and smoothly to the point of perfection at ranges from point blank to about forty five feet.  It would be hard to imagine a more effective rod in its class. It has both subtle beauty and functional excellence.

This is a very rare opportunity to own a superb and very scarce rod, made by one of the greatest rod makers of the modern age during his all too brief tenure at the works of the most famous prestige tackle firm of all time.
