Barder Rod Co Chris Yates Merlin 11’ 3-piece Avon rod with its made to measure hand stitched leather case c2016

This unique rod was completed last year and has remained in storage ever since.  It is to all intents and purposes new.

All three sections are solid built split cane, made from bamboo that I flame tempered to a rich medium caramel colour.  The action is our 3-piece interpretation of the Chris Yates Merlin, and performs in exactly the same way, functionally, as its two piece counterpart.

The 3-piece format is especially useful for transportation.  As well as its tailor made bag, we were able to have a case made to measure for this rod (two piece rods are too long for any piece of hide), from hand stitched full grain traditionally tanned English bridle leather.  It is lined with an aluminium tube and needs to be seen, handled and even sniffed to fully appreciate its utter splendour.

The 26” handle has nickel silver fittings throughout, all with our special concave knurling.  The cork is finest Flor grade with an elongated ‘onion’ shaped top.  The butt cap has a red rubber button.

The ferrules are nickel silver splint end suction type, waterproof, blued & lacquered.  They are fitted with hand turned well figured olive wood & cork stoppers.

The butt ring is a particularly nice and specially selected vintage ‘Agatine’ lined model, with an Amberfin tip ring and hard chromed stainless steel stand-off intermediate rings.  Whippings for the rings and ferrules are transparent Pearsall’s bottle green silk with very fine Pearsall’s scarlet silk tippings.  The graduated intermediate whippings are so fine that they can barely be felt beneath the flawless yacht varnish finish.  The traditional hook keeper ring is secured with a hand-forged nickel silver strap.

The action is progressive, with a fine and sensitive tip that bends smoothly into the middle.  The butt section fully supports the middle and tip with plenty of reserve power but isn’t rigid or unyielding.  This is our super-refined interpretation of the classic all round Avon-style rod.

The rod is suitable for reel lines of 3 – 6 pounds breaking strain and casting weights up to 1 ounce.  The test curve is 1 - 1¼ pounds.

Price: £2,650
